The driver and a passenger were able to free themselves after the 11:20 p.m. accident at 5 S. Convent Ave., near Center Street, but the damaged pole and its electric lines prevented towing the car. "The car can't be moved until Met-Ed gets there," an officer said. "If that pole comes down, it's going right into a house. " A Northampton County emergency dispatcher said Met-Ed would try to have a repair crew on the scene by 1:30 a.m. There were no reports of power
As vacations go, this one was a pip. Some of the year's best cycling weather, of course, came in the week that followed Tuesday of last week, when I was rendered unable to get out to enjoy it. Mother Nature has a sadistic sense of humor. I shan't bother with all the lurid details because some are in dispute, but on that day, after I wrote my Aug. 6 column, I was on my bicycle, near the Rothrock car dealership in South Whitehall Township, happily heading for the serene boonies of western Lehigh County.
A five-car crash in south Allentown Wednesday morning left some injured and tied up traffic through some of the morning rush hour. The accident happed at 6:08 a.m. this morning when one car tried to go straight but was in the turning lane in the 1000 block of Lehigh Street, near Wyoming Street. The impact set off a chain of collisions. Assistant Police Chief Jorge Medero said this morning there were some injuries but did not immediately have details. Emergency radio dispatch initially included calls for a rescue, but Medero said no rescue was required.
A Coplay couple were seriously injured Wednesday morning when their car blew a tire and crashed into a tree in North Whitehall Township, police said. Douglas Lloyd, 79, was driving west at 4101 Sand Spring Road at 10:55 a.m. when a tire failed and he lost control of the car, which went off the right shoulder, state police at Bethlehem said. After the car hit the tree, it flew into the brick and wooden Sand Spring Apartments sign in front of the apartment complex, about 160 feet east of Park View Drive, Trooper Daniel Jones said.
A Pocono Summit woman has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in a Feb. 16 Mount Pocono car crash, from which she fled on foot when she was told police were on the way, police said. Charmain Ottley, 34, left footprints in the snow after the 11:15 p.m. crash into the front yard at Spruce Drive and Mountain Road, Pocono Mountain Regional police said. Police determined that Ottley was the driver and found her a short time later and not far away riding in another car as a passenger, police said.Though she still does not think justice was served, Bonnie Brader said Friday that she believes there's a reason God spared Amber Washko, the drunken driver involved in the car crash that took her son's life. "It's clear to me that God intended for Amber to walk away from that horrible accident," she said. "It's the only explanation I can understand. " Brader was in Lehigh County Court on Friday to attend Washko's sentencing hearing. Washko, 31, of Catasauqua, was ordered to serve three to six months in the county jail and pay a $2,000 fine.
