 A 22-year-old Northampton County woman died Sunday after her car veered off the northbound lanes of Route 33 in Plainfield Township. Police said Shawnalai Werkheiser of Nazareth was driving at a high rate of speed near mile marker 14.3 when she lost control of her car. Witnesses had seen her weaving between lanes before the crash, according to police. The car left the east side of the road, striking a traffic sign and a tree before coming to a stop. Two bystanders, one of them a nurse, pulled Werkheiser from the car and tried to resuscitate her, state police said.
A car crashed into a utility pole on the west side of Nazareth on Wednesday night, snapping the pole, which dangled precariously over the damaged vehicle. The driver and a passenger were able to free themselves after the 11:20 p.m. accident at 5 S. Convent Ave., near Center Street, but the damaged pole and its electric lines prevented towing the car. "The car can't be moved until Met-Ed gets there," an officer said. "If that pole comes down, it's going right into a house. " A Northampton County emergency dispatcher said Met-Ed would try to have a repair crew on the scene by 1:30 a.m. There were no reports of power outages.
State police have identified the Lehighton woman who was injured seriously last week when her car hit a parked camper trailer in East Penn Township. Tammy Stiver, 37, of N. Second Street, was knocked out when her eastbound car went off E. Lizard Creek Road, Route 895, at 2:40 p.m. and crashed into the trailer, pushing it down an embankment, state police at Lehighton said Tuesday. Lehighton Ambulance took her from the accident scene to a helicopter, which flew her to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.South Whitehall Township police have announced that a car crash that split a utility pole Monday night has forced them to close a section of Mauch Chunk Road until around noon Tuesday. A westbound car on Presidential Drive crossed over Mauch Chunk Road about 10 p.m. and left the road, smashing through a guardrail and hitting the pole, police said. The driver and passenger were injured. At 1 a.m. Tuesday, a PPL repair crew was at the accident scene, and 789 homes and businesses in South Whitehall had lost electricity.Two Pen Argyl residents were hurt seriously Wednesday when a car crashed into a tree in the Poconos, police said. Michael Melascaglia was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 11:50 p.m. just north of Frable Road in Chestnuthill Township. Although a state police news release and some public records listed Melascaglia's address in Budd Lake, N.J., other recent public records indicate he lived in the Kresgeville section of Polk Township.A woman traveling with an 8-year-old girl drove their car into a utility pole in southern Monroe County on Friday afternoon, bringing down telephone lines, police said. Dana Vitale, 47, of Albrightsville smashed into the pole about 4:25 p.m. on Route 209 near Kitty Lane in Polk Township, state police at Lehighton said. The car then continued another 50 before it stopped along the road, police said. Vitale suffered a minor injury, but the girl, Mariella Vitale, also of Albrightsville, was not hurt, police said.Traffic along Route 663 in Richland Township, Bucks County, was slowed Sunday afternoon because of a car crash. No information about the crash was immediately available.A 46-year-old Pasadena man was killed Sunday morning after he lost control of his car during a drag race and slammed into a tree, Anne Arundel County police said. Det. Devin Michael Spence, 24, of Westminster, was killed in the crash when his 2001 Ford Focus collided with the bus, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. "I am ashamed and saddened I stand before you in this capacity," Jill Swerdlin told Circuit Judge Timothy J. Martin before the she was sentenced. Swerdlin, 47, a defense attorney who has represented suspected dealers, pleaded guilty to drug charges in June. She admitted she had smuggled Suboxone — a drug used to treat addiction to opiates — into the Baltimore County Detention Center to clients during visits.
